Wind Flow Scenarios for Dune Croft

20.01.25

We have been working on a visualistaion of the wind flow for our project in The Park Ecovillage Findhorn in Scotland. It has been an interesting research so far as we are trying to comprehend how much energy we would get from the small wind turbine on site.

Our project is a self-sufficient, off-grid dwelling that meets all its needs for water, power and sewage and a significant portion of its occupant’s nutritional needs through food growing in greenhouses and outside. It follows the Naturhus (Nature House) concept as our client would like to grow most of its food needs all year long.

Testing Conditions Settings

Prevailing wind South West at average at 5 m/s. Boundary conditions set at 5 m/s on SW face and unknown at opposing face.

Solve Settings: 250 iterations, 25 results

Traces visualisation at 4 grid density, Z axis coverage 0-2500

Tested Point: distance between ground and turbine component centre at +13m

Scenario 0: Empty Void

Scenario 1: Terrain Only

Point solving at 250 iterations;

Wind velocity at turbine centre: 5.58 m/s

Scenario 2: Terrain + Design000

Point solving at 250 iterations;

Wind velocity at turbine centre: 5.7 m/s
