Tyrrell House is a ground floor extension and landscaping project in East Dulwich, London. The design created an open plan kitchen and dining area with a strong connection to the garden and maximised the amount of daylight reaching the ground floor without compromising the space of the garden.
Externally, a timber framed extension wrapped in a black rubber membrane creates a base for plants to climb, extending the garden up and onto the house. Its folded roof collects all the rain water from the rear roofs of the house directing it, through a one metre long water spout into a rain garden. The size and shape of the rain garden, the projection and height of the water spout, as well as the type of plants and soil were all considered in the careful design of the rain garden to reduce risk of ponding and to allow rain water to be drained back into the water table.
Internally, a triangular skylight is set into the folded ceiling following the roof form and allowing daylight to spill into the kitchen, dining room and the playroom.View more Homes
