Tyrrell House is a ground floor extension and landscaping project in East Dulwich, London. The design proposal was to design an open plan kitchen and dining area with a strong connection to the garden and to maximise the amount of daylight into the ground floor without compromising the liveability of the garden.
Externally, a timber structure extension wrapped in a black rubber membrane creates the base for plants to grow vertically making it virtually inexistant. Its folded roof collects all the rain water from the rear roofs of the house directing it, through a 1metre long water spout into the rain garden. The size and shape of the rain garden, the projection and height of the water spout, as well as the type of plants and soil were all considered in the careful design of the rain garden to reduce risk of overflowing or ponding and allow rain water to be drained back into the water table.
Internally, a triangular skylight inset on a folded ceiling mimicking the roof form allows daylight to spill into the open plan kitchen/dining and the playroom.View more Homes
