Semi-detached three bedroom house

Brockenhurst, Hampshire, UK

This project is a “deep-retrofit” and ground floor extension of a 1920's semi-detached house.

The project was designed to meet the AECB Silver Performance Standard and has both cavity wall insulation and internal wall insulation to achieve u-values that are high enough to counter the poor heat loss form factor. Windows have been replaced with triple glazing and reflective membranes were installed in the roof to reduce summer overheating. The ventilation strategy employs mechanical extract vents in each wet room which pull air in through natural leakage.

The ground floor extension with its carefully crafted, timber structure "chinese-hat" roof introduces an element of fun in a rather plain rear elevation while simultaneously creating a protected exit into the garden and accomodating a fully accessible ground floor layout.
