Arrange structure to match forces

Quercus robur

This section through a small oak branch shows how complex the arrangement of fibres can be. Often wood grain may be supposed to be fairly homogenous but it is in fact growing in highly specific directions to form strong joints between members. Fibres are often oriented in the direciton of principal forces and in amounts equal to the magnitute of the forces. This eliminates stress concentrations and increases robustness.
