No.19:
Adapt to manage fire risk

Kingdom:

Plantae

Species:

Quercus suber

A cross-section through a Cork Oak shows the thick layer of spongy cork bark. The bark is intumescent, expanding many times its thickness when heated. This adaption improves the fire resistance of the tree allowing it to survive in forest fires whilst other species must regrow from seed.
